Family foundation helps Canton Day Care Center's expansion plans

Watertown Daily Times - 7/6/2018

July 06--CANTON -- A family's charitable foundation has helped the Canton Day Care Center raise $35,000 toward its $450,000 expansion project.

The center raised the funding through a partnership with the Thompson-Weatherup Family Charitable Foundation.

In late 2017, the family foundation, as a component fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation, presented a challenge to Canton Day Care Center's Board of Directors as a way to honor Esther Weatherup Thompson, who devoted her life to her family and children.

The two-month challenge started in February when the foundation pledged to match all individual contributions dollar-for-dollar up to $20,000. More than $15,000 was raised through individual contributions.

The Thompson-Weatherup Family Charitable Foundation decided to honor its original commitment to contribute the entire $20,000, which it believes will have a far-reaching impact on children, their families, and the community, according to a press release from the day care center.

The funds raised are being applied toward Canton Day Care Center's capital expansion project to build out the second floor of its facility at 205 State Street Road. The facility adjoins United Helpers Maplewood campus, where Mrs. Thompson resided for six years prior to her death last year. Once constructed, the center's capacity will double to accommodate 52 additional children, ranging in age from 6 weeks to 12 years.

"The need for high-quality, reliable child care in St. Lawrence County is especially acute in the Canton and Potsdam areas, where there is a constant influx of new faculty and staff at the four local colleges and universities," said Marie Loson, a day care center board member, parent and fundraising chair. "Our partnership with the Thompson-Weatherup Family Charitable Foundation and the Northern New York Community Foundation on this donor challenge has unlocked the generosity of the local community, and we are grateful to them, as well as all those who donated during the challenge, for giving us their vote of confidence."

Education, a lifelong passion of Mrs. Thompson and her husband Robert "Bob" M. Thompson, underpins the family's generosity.

In making the gift, Mr. Thompson explained, "Our family foundation is pleased to support the Canton Day Care Center with its expansion project, which we believe is an investment in the larger community. Helping local children grow and learn while working parents know their children are safe and being nurtured is important to the foundation and the community."

The mission of the family foundation, since its establishment in 2005, is to make grants to charitable and educational organizations for activities related to environmental, social and economic opportunities associated with natural resource management and community development in St. Lawrence County and the surrounding region. The family believes education helps build the knowledge, life skills, perspectives, attitudes and values needed to foster sustainable communities and societies.

Those interested in supporting Canton Day Care Center's capital campaign can make checks payable to Canton Day Care Center, Inc. and mail them to 205 State Street Road, Canton, N.Y. 13617.
