BRIEF: GOP state senators to hold child care summit in September

Post-Bulletin - 8/15/2018

Aug. 15--LAKE CITY -- State Senate Republicans on Sept. 10 will host a public forum to hear concerns about access to and affordability of child care

"We are in the midst of a child care crisis," said state Sen. Mike Goggin, R-Red Wing. "It is becoming harder and harder for parents to find care, particularly in greater Minnesota, and at-home providers are finding it nearly impossible to remain in business because of excessive regulations."

Goggin said the listening session in Lake City, hosted by the Child Care Access Working Group, will allow lawmakers to hear directly from families and providers.

In addition to hearing public testimony during the listening sessions, the Child Care Access Working Group will also visit local child care facilities to hear about the challenges they face as providers, according to a statement from the Senate Republicans Committee. The group will also meet with local economic development authorities to discuss workforce shortages attributable to a lack of child care options.

The event, which will be from 6-8 p.m.Sept. 10 at the Lake City Library, is part of a series of forums featuring a bipartisan group of senators to be held across Minnesota.
