SUNY Potsdam's new child-care center to have ribbon cutting Sept. 7

Aug. 31--POTSDAM -- SUNY Potsdam will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3:30 p.m.Sept. 7 to celebrate the completion of its child-care center.

The newly opened facility features seven classrooms specially designed for every age group served by the center, up to school age, according to Alexandra J. Wilke, SUNY Potsdam's director of public relations. It has an additional after-school program for children up to 9 years old -- as well as outdoor and indoor play areas, a commercial kitchen, a laundry area, stroller storage, reception space, a parent waiting area, a break room and a library, according to a news release from SUNY Potsdam.

"The center was previously located in the oldest building on campus, Merritt Hall, which was renovated to accommodate daycare classrooms and play areas many years ago. In 2014, this project was one that our campus pitched as a high priority when speaking with our local legislators," Mrs. Wilke wrote in an email to the Times.

The facility was designed by Architectural Resources PC, and the general contractor was Bette & Cring LLC.

The center offers care for the kids of students, staff, faculty and the community at large. It's open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday during the academic year and from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during summer sessions, according to the website.

Ninety-eight children are currently enrolled in the child-care center.

Parents who wish to have their children be taken care of have to pay. The cost is established using a sliding fee scale based on income, according to Mrs. Wilke.
