Sharpsburg group for single moms offers support, social networking

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - 11/20/2018

Nov. 20--Single moms in need of support or friendship can turn to a new group that will meet in Sharpsburg.

The First English Lutheran Church, along with Anchorpoint Counseling Ministry, is launching the Single Moms CARE Group on Jan. 10.

Registration is open now for the free program.

The mission of the group is to provide a place for single moms to work together, develop relationships and learn strategies to deal with everyday challenges.

Topics will include food insecurity, childcare, employment, self-care, social networking and anxiety.

Mark Heinbockel, director of development for Anchorpoint Counseling, said the program aims to reinforce the message that "things get better and not to give up."

The group will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. the second and fourth Thursdays at First English,125 North Main Street. Dinner will be provided at 6 p.m., prior to the meeting.

Childcare, homework help and age-appropriate programs will be available for children, from newborn to eighth grade.

Founded in 2014, the group currently serves about 30 single moms through sites in Franklin Park and West View. The Sharpsburg meetings were underwritten by the Nina Baldwin Fisher Foundation and Portiuncula Foundation.

Members of the group represent every season of a single mom, from new parents to those who have divorced after decades of marriage.

For registration, contact 412-366-1300 or dgoss@anchorpointcounselingministry.org.
