BRIEF: United Way educates on child abuse awareness

Dominion Post - 4/4/2017

April 04--Childcare providers and other early childhood educators from across the region gathered over the weekend to attend the Early Childhood Annual Spring Training (ECAST), sponsored by the Children and Family Leadership Council. Dr. Maria Sargent, a nationally recognized expert in early childhood and early intervention, presented the training, "Supporting Social-Emotional Development in Very Young Children," to over 200 participants.

All participants received a Pinwheel for Prevention from Prevent Child Abuse WV, as April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The pinwheels will be displayed in pinwheel gardens throughout the month to bring awareness to the community.

A free workshop for parents, teachers, coaches and community members advocating for children is scheduled from 6-8 p.m.April 25, at Mountainview Elementary School. Therapists from the Mon County Child Advocacy Center will provide training, "Darkness to Light: End Child Abuse," for adults and host a discussion group for youth in grades 4-8. Speakers are also available to present information on strengthening families to prevent abuse and neglect. For more information, contact Beth Elyard at frn@unitedwaympc.org.
