BRIEF: Former child-care worker gets probation for child neglect

Dominion Post - 6/6/2017

June 06--A former child-care worker will go on probation as punishment for breaking a baby's arm while in her care.

On Monday, Monongalia County Circuit Court Judge Susan Tucker sentenced Stephanie Weis to three years on probation and 100 hours of community service for child neglect resulting in injury. Tucker sentenced Weis to one to three years in prison, but suspended that term for probation.

As part of her sentence, Weis must continue to receive mental health treatment and write an apology letter to the victim's family.

In July 2013, Weis worked at Pleasant Day Schools and was taking care of four babies. She got up from a chair and reached into the crib and abruptly moved the victim.

The girl's arm broke as a result of Weis' action.

She initially denied knowledge when the victim's father arri-ved, although video surveillance showed her checking on the baby after the incident.

Weis eventually confessed to police and said she grabbed the baby and heard the arm pop.

Weis told Tucker that since she was released on bond she continued treatment for mental health and substance abuse and now has her own apartment and car.

"I'm really trying," she said.
