AROUND AND ABOUT Golf invite raises $100,000 to help child abuse victims

Omaha World-Herald - 8/3/2017

The June 13 Project Harmony Golf Invitational raised $100,000 to help child abuse victims in eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa.

Indian Creek Golf Course was the setting for the event, which drew 152 golfers to a four-person scramble.

Among prizes in a raffle were a golf trip to the Dismal River Club, Creighton University sports tickets, Kansas City Royals tickets (with an overnight hotel stay), University of Nebraska at Omaha men's soccer season tickets, lessons with area golf pros, Husker items (including a Mike Riley-autographed football) and a round of golf at Happy Hollow Club with champion Nebraska amateur Susan Marchese.

Golf Fore Kids

The June 19 Golf Fore Kids tourney raised more than $41,000 for Child Saving Institute.

The event drew 108 golfers to The Players Club at Deer Creek, where participants had a burger-and-brat lunch on the links.

Proceeds from the outing will help the organization aid abused, neglected children.

Kim Bachman, Zoe Johnson and Julie Shaner were event chairwomen.

The winning teams:

First flight: Jay Anderson, Tobin Vontz, Jeff Wemhoff, Stephen Winterhof

Second flight: Steve Dugger, Dan Houghton, Phillip Lee, Brett Lindstrom

Golf Fore Grants

How much golf you played at the June 12 Golf Fore Grants had a lot to do with the weather.

Golfers who set out on the morning nine-hole round had to stop play when a thunderstorm came up after a few holes. By the afternoon 18-hole round, the weather had improved and everyone completed play without incident.

The tourney at Shadow Ridge Country Club raised more than $34,000 for the Elkhorn Public Schools Foundation's Classroom Grants program, which provides funds for anti-bullying programs, middle school plays and equipment such as "smart" projectors at schools throughout the district. Guest speaker was Chad Soupir, principal of Elkhorn Valley View Middle School.

A putting contest and raffle also were part of the event, which drew 140 golfers.

RiteCare Classic

Speech and language therapy at the University of Nebraska Medical Center'sMunroe-Meyer Institute will benefit from the June 21 RiteCare Classic at Pacific Springs.

Seventy-six golfers turned out for the four-person scramble. The $16,500 raised went to the Scottish Rite Foundation of Omaha, which sponsors the RiteCare speech-language clinic at the institute.

Guest speaker was T.J. Brumfield, father of 4-year-old Eva Brumfield, who uses RiteCare clinic services to help her deal with apraxia of speech - a neurological condition that makes speaking physically difficult.

John "Buzz" Garlock was event chairman.

The winning teams:

First flight: Bob Dobbs, Ed Larson, Jim Meisinger, Al Mueller

Second flight: Don Shiu, Mike Knust, Ryan Bertucci, Pat McMahon
