Carver Reporter - 2/2/2018

PLYMOUTH - Looking for a way to support a family member, partner, friend or significant other suffering from mental illness? Don't miss the start of NAMI-Plymouth's annual "Family to Family" program which begins Tuesday, Feb. 6.

Family to Family is a free 12-session education program for family, partners, friends and significant others of adults living with mental illness.

Taught by individuals who are also family members and know what it is like to have a loved one living with mental illness, the course addresses illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression and other mental health conditions.

The program is taught by family members, people who have lived the journey and can relate on a personal level to those seeking knowledge and comfort. These volunteers are trained by NAMI Mass according to the best practices instituted by NAMI National.

The highest standards are maintained by this practice and are governed by the oversight of each program's Steering Committee and the Education Committee.

Thousands of those who have taken Family to Family have described the program as life-changing.

"Overall, this course was the single most helpful and informative tool offered in all my years searching for answers," one attendee commented in a press release. "It has helped me better understand my brother and communicate more effectively."

"The course has helped me to realize that my son is more than just his illness," another Family to Family participant noted, "that recovery is very possible and that I am not alone in this."

The 12-week course, which meets Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. at BID Hospital - Plymouth in the Funkhouser B Conference Room, located on the lower level, is free; registration is required.
