Mothers in Recovery Support Group to meet this month

Independent Tribune - 4/18/2018

CONCORD- The Family Support Network of the Southern Piedmont has been working hard on establishing and growing its Mothers in Recovery Support Group which will meet in Concord this month.

The group has been renamed 'Superstars,' which was inspired by the following quote: "For a star to be born, there is one thing that must happen: a gaseous nebula must collapse. So collapse. Crumble. This is not your destruction. This is your birth" -n. t.

Individuals who are working for recovery need a healthy support system and often that means they have to find completely new friends to surround themselves with.

Geneva Lopez, program coordinator for The Family Support Network of the Southern Piedmont, said it is the network's hope that using the evidence-based Circle of Parents model, this support group can be a stepping stone for these women in building that new community for themselves.

Lopez said his group also knows that stress is one of the biggest factors that leads to relapse. Having a strong, healthy support system can help reduce the risk for these woman and the children in their care, when the stress of life and motherhood feels overwhelming.

The support group has a meeting on Tuesday, April 24 from 6-7:30 p.m. at 1065 Vinehaven Drive NE in Concord and will include free food and free child care.

The support group is intended for current mothers and pregnant women who share a desire to live clean and sober. It is for mothers in all stages of recovery, whether they have been sober for 5 minutes or 5 years.

Superstars is a division of PROJECT BABY REACH, a program of Family Support Network of Southern Piedmont with funding through the Cabarrus Partnership for Children.
