Thank you for celebrating Week of the Young Child

The Brunswick Beacon - 4/25/2018

To the editor:

Smart Start of Brunswick County would like to thank the many residents of Brunswick County who help celebrate the Week of the Young Child, an annual celebration hosted by the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) celebrating early learning, young children, their teachers and families.

The week started with the staff planting a pinwheel garden at their office to honor Pinwheels for Prevention. The annual pinwheel garden is a sign of hope and unity within the community as part of the Prevent Child Abuse. In partnership with Brunswick County Parks and Recreation, children enrolled in a variety of child care centers planted flowers in the Shallotte and Leland parks.

Another parks and recreation collaboration included installing the fourth Park Time Reading Little Free Library at Waccamaw Park. Flowers, posthole digging, cement and muscle were provided by Parks and Recreation staff. Volunteers read to children in child care centers throughout the county and Kunga Kids Yoga was provided by our Kunga Kids Yoga trained Quality Consultant Laura Travis.

On Thursday, the Smart Start of Brunswick County Board of Directors, volunteers, supporters and staff celebrated a new and exciting fundraising event, Take a Chance for Children, with Sheriff John Ingram as master of ceremonies. Sheriff Ingram drew the winning raffle ticket purchased by a person employed in the child care industry. How appropriate to conclude the Week of the Young Child!

On behalf of Smart Start of Brunswick County Board of Directors and staff, we are very fortunate and honored to receive the support of a kind and caring community.

Helen Gabriel, Smart Start of Brunswick County executive director
