One Voice offers support for families struggling with addiction

Register-Herald - 9/8/2018

Sept. 07--If a family member or loved one is struggling with substance use, sometimes it's difficult to know where to turn.

"For the person with substance use disorder, there is treatment and counseling available," said Melonie Terry, program director at One Voice.

"But there are so many families who fall through the cracks. We've experienced this through phone calls from family members asking, 'What actions do we take?'"

Both Terry and One Voice Board President Scott McKinney decided a safe space for these families was needed.

Since spring of last year, a support group called S.A.F.E. (Supporting Addicts' Families Everywhere) has been meeting the second Tuesday of each month.

"It is a very safe environment," Terry said. "It's nonthreatening and nonjudgemental."

While no clinical services are offered, such as diagnosis or counseling, the group welcomes families to share their stories and connect with one another.

"Sometimes it's just helpful to vent and talk. The families, they bond."

The free support group has welcomed 10 families so far, many of whom have shared positive feedback about their experience with Terry.

"We don't have all the answers," she said. "I don't know that anyone does, but we can be a support for them."

The next support group meeting will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m. at One Voice, located at 613 S. Kanwaha St. in Beckley.
