Tax credit aimed at boosting child care spaces

The Brandon Sun - 11/6/2018

The provincial government has created a new tax credit for private corporations in an effort to encourage the creation of more child care spaces in Manitoba.

The Child Care Centre Development Tax Credit will allow approved applicants who don't normally offer child care services to claim $10,000 for every licensed infant or pre-school space created after March 12, 2018, and before 2021.

The number of spaces under the program will be limited to 200, but a news release from the provincial government said this may increase over time.

"This innovative tax credit supports partnerships with the private sector to encourage more child care spaces for Manitoba families who need them," Finance Minister Scott Fielding said.

"We introduced this refundable tax credit to stimulate the creation of licensed child care centres in work places, which helps businesses create strong community connections and meet employees' needs."

The program was created as part of the province's 2018 budget and will be claimable over five years.

Eligible corporations will need to create a minimum of 74 spaces for infant and/or pre-school children in Winnipeg, and 52 spaces in the rest of the province.

The credit can be claimed beginning in the tax year after the centre opens.

The province announced Monday that the first project approved for the tax credit will be built in Sage Creek, located in the southeast corner of Winnipeg, by the real-estate company Qualico.

The province will provide $740,000 for the centre, which will include 16 infant and 58 pre-school spaces, and is expected to open next spring.

"The new centre in southeast Winnipeg means more families will have access to quality child care closer to where they live or work," said Families Minister Heather Stefanson.

"This will benefit Qualico employees and Sage Creek families, and serve as a model for other projects across Manitoba under the new tax credit."
