Fayetteville VA Health Care Center to host suicide prevention event

Fayetteville Observer - 12/7/2019

Dec. 7--An event at the Fayetteville Veterans Affairs Health Care Center on Raeford Road on Wednesday will look at the question, "What Do We Really Know About Suicide?"

VA staff members and guest speakers will make presentations at the event, which is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Breakout sessions will focus on veteran suicide prevention tools, strategies, and best practices, according to a statement released by VA officials.

"Suicide is a national public health concern and the Department of Veterans Affairs has identified veteran suicide as our highest clinical priority," the statement said. "Suicide affects many different groups and is related to mental health, substance abuse, trauma, violence, injury and/or other acute psychosocial issues."

The event is intended for mental health professionals, advance practice nurses, registered nurses, and licensed practical nurses.

Others who might want to attend are clinicians who provide direct patient care such as social workers, psychologists, and counselors who work within the local community and provide needed services to veterans and VA staff, the statement said.
