Understanding the color Range

Each Health Indicator includes five-color range indexes. The color range index compares all counties in the state that have the same indicator in the same timeframe. It then calculates where the selected county falls in that range and displays the color that best reflects how the county is doing in comparison to the other counties in the filtered group. The range displays the highest and lowest county values within the state that have the same indicator for the same measurement period.

Current county values will be compared to State and National values if they are available.

Green and red arrows indicate that the county value is better or worse than the state or national value. The arrows will change directions and colors based on which end of the range is positive.
This icon simply means that the county value is equal to the state or national value.
Some indicators display blue, which means the data is not meant for health-status comparison, but is intended simply to provide information.
If history data is available the trend icon will point up or down based on its relationship to the last county value.

American Housing Survey
The American Housing Survey (AHS) collects data on the nation's housing, including apartments, single family homes, mobile homes, and vacant housing units. Unlike most surveys, the primary focus is on the housing unit; the survey does gather information on the people living in the housing units, primarily to relate the people characteristics to the housing characteristics. Since the AHS is a longitudinal survey, returning to the same housing units every year, the survey can be used to analyze the flow of households through housing.

Methodology

The AHS conducts two surveys: a national survey and a metropolitan survey. The national survey gathers information on housing throughout the country and is in the field in odd-numbered years. The 2009 metropolitan survey covers households in seven metropolitan areas. A sample of housing units was selected from the decennial survey. These are updated by a sample of addresses obtained from building permits to include housing units constructed since the sample was selected. The survey goes back to the same housing units on a regular basis, recording changes in characteristics, adding and deleting units when applicable.
