Rospert's Meat Market now on rural water

Jun. 22--Northern Ohio Rural Water (NORW) was not involved in the voluntary recall involving about 22,778 pounds of meat products at a Norwalk meat market.
Rospert's Meat Market, L.L.C., 3675 Lehigh Road, issued the recall this week after determined the products were produced with the use of a water supply that failed to meet the Ohio Department of Health's microbiological standards for private water systems in Ohio, according to the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA). Routine testing led to the discovery of E. coli bacteria being present in a water sample.
The beef, pork and lamb products were produced between May 21, 2019 and June 17, 2019.
While NORW was not mentioned in Friday's story in the Norwalk Reflector, there was a photo of a company truck in Rospert's parking lot.
"We're trying to help eliminate the problem by hooking them up to our system," said Shawn Tappel, general manager of NORW. "They were using their well water. We have hooked them up on a temporary basis and then permanently down the road."
The problem was discovered on Tuesday while an ODA Division of Meat Inspection officer was reviewing records during a routine food safety assessment.
The officer observed that results from the establishment's third-party testing laboratory indicated that a routine water sample collected at the establishment by Huron County Public Health (HCPH) on May 21 was positive for E. coli, according to the ODA. The water was used in the production of the recalled beef, pork and lamb products.
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.
HCPH officials said they are working with the ODA to remedy the situation and have contacted all Huron County licensed food and retail establishments to notify them of the recall.
