Dog food, cheese, butter: 3 recalls to know about today

March 06--Evanger's Dog & Cat Food is voluntarily expanding its recall of Hunk of Beef dog food, and is also recalling Evanger's Braised Beef and Against the Grain's Pulled Beef Products due to potential adulteration with pentobarbital.

Consuming pentobarbital can cause drowsiness, dizziness, excitement, loss of balance, nausea and even coma and death. Consumers who notice these symptoms in their pets should consult their veterinarian.

The 12-ounce cans include:

--Evanger's: Hunk of Beef: 20109

--Evanger's: Braised Beef: 20107

--Against the Grain: Pulled Beef: 80001

2. Meijer expands recall on cheese, sandwiches

Midwest-based retailer Meijer has expanded its list of recalled items to now include its Meijer brand Artisan Made Natural Muenster Cheese and its pre-wrapped Ham Sub on Artisan White Baguette due to a potential cross contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in elderly people, children and others with weakened immune systems. There have been no known illnesses reported to Meijer associated with these products.

The Meijer brand Artisan Made Natural Muenster Cheese will have the UPC 8-86926 27573-5. The Meijer deli- made Ham Sub on Artisan White Baguette has the UPC Code 7-13733 76499-5. Customers can call the company at (800) 543-3704.

3. SoyNut Butter recall related to E. Coli outbreak

Illinois-based company The SoyNut Butter Co. is recalling its I.M. Healthy Original Creamy SoyNut Butter product because it may be contaminated with Escherichia coli bacteria. The product was distributed in multiple states, may have been purchased in stores or through mail order, and in childcare centers and schools.

A total of 12 people have been infected with the outbreak strain linked to the consumption of the SoyNut Butter. Six people have been hospitalized, and four people developed a potentially life-threatening type of kidney failure.

Eleven of the 12 illnesses were reported in children under the age of 18, and no deaths have been reported. People impacted by the outbreak lived in Arizona, California, Maryland, New Jersey and Oregon.
