EDITORIAL: Autism education needed

The Ironton Tribune - 4/4/2017

April 04--Many of the sights and sounds we see and hear each day don't cause much thought. However, for those who live each day with autism, those same things can lead to an extremely stressful time.

This is especially true in certain situations like going to the mall or the grocery store, something that those who don't live with autism may take for granted.

According to the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network, which is run by the Centers for Disease Control, one in 68 children are identified with autism spectrum disorder, with boys being about four and a half times more likely than girls.

April is Autism Awareness Month, and we are fortunate to have many organizations within the county that assist those with developmental disabilities. along with their families with various programs and plans to help with day-to-day life.

However, it is important that we all do our part to become more educated on autism and other developmental disabilities and understand what those affected go through each day.

While we all may not be able to make it to each and every event, we can provide our support by educating ourselves on the condition and how we can best lend a hand if it is ever needed.
