PETS and THEIR PEOPLE: Which foods, plants and meds are toxic for pets?

Hutchinson Leader - 6/3/2017

Every year thousands of pets are brought to vets because they have ingested something that was not meant for their consumption. These accidental poisonings often result in permanent damage or even death.

Just as we would work to protect our children from getting into things that could harm them, we should all be aware of and work to avoid access to harmful foods, plants, medications and poisons for our pets.

Knowing what those things are is the first step toward avoiding a tragic situation or an expensive trip to the vet. Here are the top 10 toxins in each of these categories:

In the kitchen:

ChocolateXylitol products (sugar-free)Grapes and raisinsGarlic and onionsCaffeine drinksMacadamia nutsUnbaked yeast bread doughAlcoholTable salt

In the medicine cabinet:

Acetaminophen (Tylenol)NSAIDs (Aleve, Advil, Aspirin)Anti-depressants/Anti-anxiety medsMuscle relaxantsCold and allergy medicationsDecongestants (Sudafed, Claritin)ADHD/asthma medicationsSleep aidsHeart medicationsVitamins and minerals

In the garden:

Lillies (cats only)Spring Bulbs (tulips, daffodil, hyacinth)Dieffenbachia, philodendronPoinsettia, mistletoeHolly berriesPotato leaves and stemsMorning gloryEnglish ivyAzaleas, chrysanthemumsFoxglove

In the garage:

Mouse and rat poisonsInsecticidesAntifreezeAutomotive lubricantsInsulation (rolls or foam)AcidsIce meltGasolineBleachGlow sticks

If you suspect your pet may have ingested or overdosed on any of the items listed above, or if your pet shows any abnormal behavior - vomiting, diarrhea, staggering, foaming, lethargy and so on - contact your veterinarian immediately.

If possible, take a sample of the suspected toxin and packaging with you. Do not make your pet vomit unless directed to do so by your vet.

When choosing treats for your dogs, avoid anything with rawhide in it. Small pieces of rawhide can break off, become lodged in the intestines and begin to swell. Pork products are much safer, or products such as Greenies, chicken jerky, soft chews and healthy homemade treats.

Let's all have a safe and emergency-free summer!

HIGHLIGHT

The Heart of Minnesota Animal Shelter is currently sheltering two adorable year old Chihuahuas who are sisters and must go to a new home together. They are fun, protective, cuddly, and will even fetch a ball for you. They do not nip or bite and would do best in a home where they could be the little queens. They have been waiting for some time now so if you can provide a place for them, please visit the shelter during adoption hours or look them up on the Heart of Minnesota Animal Shelter website.
