Scouts make quite the splash learning pool safety

Claremore Daily Progress - 6/22/2017

June 22--Local Cub Scouts take a dive in the Claremore Recreation Center's (CRC) pool to learn about pool safety.

Chairman Terry S. Hancock of BSA Cub Scout Pack 0141 and BSA Boy Scout Troop 828 said, "With summer upon us and the Scouts being out of school, it is essential to teach our Scouts safety outside that of our normal camping and outside activities."

Pool safety was one of those areas for this week at the CRC taught by lifeguards.

The Scouts learned about the Do's and Don'ts of swimming and playing around a pool.

Additionally, they learned how to recognize hazards while swimming such as muscle cramps in correlation with frigid water temperatures, fatigue, dehydration and electrolyte depletion.

According to the Centers for Disease Control staying safe in and around the pool is important to prevent dangerous sunburns and drowning.

Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury death among children ages one to 14 and kills more children between the ages of one to four than anything else, according to the CDC's website.

Some prevention methods consist of adult supervision, swimming skills, life protection gear like life vests, and know CPR.

For other safety concerns that could potential cause injuries are diving boards (look before leaping); obstructions around the pool; improper storage of pool chemicals as well as unbalanced pool water; electrical devices in pool area; and horse playing around the pool.

Next week, on Monday, the Claremore Police Department will teach bicycle safety at the Scouts next meeting.

Hancock said each Scout's bicycle would be checked for maintenance issues such as brakes, chains and reflectors, while also making necessary changes as needed.

He said he Scout leaders will continue to emphasize safety in many areas of summertime activities involving swimming, bicycling, pool safety and hiking.
