City sanitation and public works manager fired

Nanaimo News Bulletin - 12/3/2017

The city sanitation manager who had been overseeing the implementation of the Sort Toss Roll program has been fired.

Charlotte Davis, who was the City of Nanaimo's manager of sanitation, recycling and public works administration, is no longer with the city, confirmed Mayor Bill McKay.

He said city council received word of the decision from the city manager on Friday morning.

"I can't comment on the reasons for termination," McKay said. "We've not been given any reasons for termination, nor is it our place to be involved in staffing."RELATED: CAO says city's corporate restructuring now complete

The city is in continuing to phase in Sort Toss Roll, a new collection system for garbage, recycling and organic waste utilizing automated trucks, costing $7.9 million. McKay was asked if he's been satisfied with the rollout of the service so far.

"For the most part, yes. The public works people have been very responsive to the citizens' needs," McKay said. "There's some issues with respect to the expansion of the going out of scope of the original contract, however, we were provided with rationale for that by our staff, so I'm satisfied with that," he said.

Davis recently received the Public Works Association of B.C.'s 2017 Women's Ambassador Award for excellence and leadership in her field.

In other City of Nanaimo staff news, McKay confirmed that chief operations officer Brad McRae is on leave.
