Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have determined there is a multistate E. coli outbreak, including in New Jersey, where the state Department of Health has been working with the CDC and FDA on an investigation into E. coli cases in four counties.

According to a news release on the CDC website, CDC, several states, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture'sFood Safety and Inspection Service are investigating a multistate outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 infections. As of April 9, 17 people infected with the outbreak strain of E. coli O157:H7 have been reported from seven states: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Ohio, Missouri, Washington and Idaho.

Last week, the NJDOH said that it was investigating E. coli cases in Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex and Warren counties, according to department spokeswoman Donna Leusner.

The case breakdown is four in Hunterdon, one in Warren, one Middlesex and two in Somerset.

"Eight people have been hospitalized and five of those individuals have been discharged," Leusner said.
