United Way of Richmond County asks agencies for letters of intent

Richmond County Daily Journal - 6/23/2017

June 22--ROCKINGHAM -- United Way of Richmond County is looking for agencies to partner with to meet "the critical health and human needs" in the county, according to a letter from Michelle Parrish.

Parrish, executive director, said United Way's goal is to "create long-lasting changes by addressing the underlying causes of problems."

"I find this the most satisfying part of my job -- investing in the success of our agencies and learn(ing) more about the wonderful programs our partnering agencies provide to meet critical human needs in our community," she continued.

Interested agencies -- including those already partnered with United Way -- are being asked submit a short letter of intent to apply for funding, which are due by 2 p.m. on July 17.

"We are asking for less information about your agency and more about the program of work for which you are seeking funding," Parrish said in the letter. "You will be asked to specify clearly the anticipated outcome of your program. Please tell us what you are attempting to do, why there is a need for it, the expected outcome, and how you will know if you have achieved this outcome. As much as possible, this information should be quantified."

To be eligible, agencies must provide health or human service programs in Richmond County and have a recognized nonprofit status. New or existing programs can be funded if they meet criteria and school or government programs will be considered in programs and projects are not covered by tax funds.

Upcoming priorities for the United Way include:

--strengthening and supporting families --parenting programs; affordable, safe housing; overcoming chemical dependency.

--empowering children and youth -- gang and dropout prevention; mentoring relationships, increasing success level in school.

--promoting health and wellness -- reduce obesity; independence and support for the elderly.

United Way will not fund: startup programs, political campaigns, loan payments or deficit spending, services normally supported by tax dollars or capital campaigns for buildings.

United Way of Richmond County currently has 16 partnering agencies and raised more than $325,000 last year, according to Parrish.
