Gang of cows and bulls terrorize resident

The Gallup Independent - 11/4/2017

GALLUP - You can add "aggressive bulls" to the list of wrongdoers that deputies for the McKinley County County Sheriff's Office have been tasked to deal with.

Deputies were dispatched to Hasler Valley Monday to take care of a gang of cows and aggressive bulls that had wandered onto the property of Lucinia Carey and were breaking the law.

Deputy Eric Jim said when he arrived at her place, he met Carey who told him that this same gang had been coming onto her property for the past six months, eating her plants and trees, and causing damage to her house and other structures on her property.

Jim said he searched the area and found evidence - tracks and such - all around the property indicating that there had been some gang activity on the property.

Carey told Jim that the bulls were the main problem.

"She stated that the bulls were aggressive and would charge at her when she would try and chase them off the property," Jim wrote in his report.

Carey said she was especially concerned about an elderly relative who lived on the property because the property did not have running water and the restroom was located away from the house.

Jim said it did not take long for him to find the culprits. They were grazing about 100 yards east of Carey's residence.

When he examined the offenders, Jim said he could find no trace of brands indicating who they belonged to so he had to assume they were runaways or strays.

Jim said he would contact the proper authorities on the Navajo Reservation who handle this kind of problem. A short time later, he contacted the Navajo Rangers and explained what was going on and the officials said they would look into it immediately.

Officials for the Navajo Nation Resourse Enforcement Office said later that the animals were impounded and efforts are now underway to find the owners.
