Father Gregory Boyle to speak at Elkhart County Juvenile Summit

The Truth - 3/26/2018

March 26--GOSHEN -- The Jesuit priest who founded the world's largest gang intervention, rehabilitation and re-entry program will be the keynote speaker at this year's Elkhart County Juvenile Summit.

The annual gathering will run from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at Maple City Chapel, 2015 Lincolnway East, Goshen. Lawyers, mental health professionals, teachers, probation officers, law enforcement officers and child advocates will gather for the conference sponsored by the Elkhart County Juvenile Court.

Father Boyle founded Homeboy Bakery as a social enterprise business in 1992 to respond to the gang violence in East Los Angeles. He treated gang members as human beings and offered hope and jobs in a program that became Homeboy Industries, which helps 15,000 men and women who walk through its doors every year. Boyle received the University of Notre Dame's Laetare Medal in 2017, the most prestigious award given to American Catholics. He is the author of "Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion," a New York Times bestseller and winner of multiple awards. His new book is "Barking to the Choir: The Power of Radical Kinship."

Other speakers at the summit are Julie Whitman, executive director of the Indiana Children's Commission, and Justice Steven David, of the Indiana Supreme Court. A panel discussion featuring experts from the Youth Division of the Indiana Department of Corrections is also planned.

"The 10th year of the Juvenile Summit will provide participants with additional tools to serve the children and families in our community," said Deborah Domine, Elkhart County Juvenile Magistrate, event organizer. "By law, the business of juvenile justice goes on behind closed doors. The Summit is a day for the entire community to focus on our children. It is a day to learn, to collaborate and to be inspired to serve our children even better."

The Elkhart County Juvenile Summit was started in 2008 through a grant from the Indiana Supreme Court and is sponsored annually by the Elkhart County Juvenile Court.
