Stan Schmidt named Carthage Citizen of the Year

Jan. 22--CARTHAGE, Mo. -- Stan Schmidt, owner and founder of Schmidt Associates, P.C., certified public accountants, received the Richard M. Webster Citizen of the Year Award on Friday during the Carthage Chamber of Commerce annual banquet.

Given by the Carthage Rotary Club in memory of the late Sen. Richard M. Webster, the award is in recognition of demonstrated devotion to the Carthage community.

More than 400 members and community leaders gathered at Carthage Memorial Hall to recognize outstanding teachers, business leaders, volunteers and community members.

Other awards and winners were:

--Retiring Board of Directors Award: Ryan Brunnert, Ott Food Products. The award is given to retiring board members in appreciation of support or encouragement.

--Chairman's Award: Jeanine Poe, Maple Leaf committee chairwoman. This award is presented in recognition of 2016 contributions to the Chamber and Carthage community.

--Athena Award: Lee Elliff Pound, Missouri Southern Alumni Association director. The award is sponsored by the Ruth I. Kolpin Foundation and SMB Bank and is a nationally recognized award presented in recognition of those who support, develop and honor women leaders.

--Artist of the Year Award: Bill Sutter. Sponsored by artCentral, the award recognizes contributions to the Carthage art community.

--Golden Key Awards: Sponsored by Southwest Missouri Bank, these awards go to educators. This year's awards went to Sherri Wick, second grade teacher at Mark Twain Elementary; Tammy Dobler, sixth grade teacher at Carthage Intermediate Center; Gina Robbins, counselor for Carthage Junior High School; and Jennifer Sager, band director at Carthage High School.

--Humanitarian of the Year Award: Carthage Crisis Center. The award was sponsored by McCune Brooks Health Care Foundation and is presented in recognition of improvements to health care in the Carthage community.

--Community Enhancement Award: ADM Milling. Sponsored by the Carthage Chamber of Commerce, the award recognizes an organization, committee, group or individual that has contributed significantly to make the community a better place to live.

--Spotlight Award: Cave Gang Pizza & Pub, Eli and Vanessa Bruton. Sponsored by Woodpecker Products, the award goes to one business each year that has contributed to the overall enhancement of the business community of Carthage through revitalization or improvements made to their business location.

--Small Business of the Year Award: Lunch Boxtruck, Caleb Stiles. Sponsored by Dr. Fly's Salon, the award goes to one business each year that has provided a positive image and been a vibrant entity within the Carthage business community.

--Emerging Leader of the Year: Tyler Smith, Southwest Missouri Bank. Sponsored by MSSU, the award is presented in recognition of individuals who further their career path or begin a new career path.
