Registration Deadline Today: Home Fruit Production Workshops x 2 on Feb. 17

The Hahn Horticulture Garden and Historic Smithfield Plantation are teaming up to present two workshops with local horticulturist Barry Robinson to get you ready to tackle fruit production at home. You may participate in one or both. Home Production will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Hahn Garden Pavilion. The cost is $30 for the general public or $25 for Hahn or Smithfield members. The second workshop, Fruit Tree Pruning, will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Smithfield. The cost is $15 for the general public or $10 for Hahn or Smithfield members. There is also a combo price for both of $40 general, $30 members. Pre-registration is required by Feb. 13. (Inclement weather date: Feb. 24.)

Meadowbrook Roaming Readers

Join us for a winter fitness challenge and enter for a chance to win a FitBit Activity Tracker. Financial Peace University

Colonial and Victorian Dance Workshop

Social dancing in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries was an integral part of English and Colonial American society. Join the English Country Dancers of the New River Valley Historic Dance Society as we travel back in time to learn these enchanting dances of a bygone era. Beginners, groups, singles and families are always welcome. Every dance will be taught by being broken down into simple components and cued while dancing. When: 7 to 9 p.m.

Blacksburg Newcomers' Club

Jason Deese, MPH, district epidemiologist for the New River Health District, will be our speaker, along with Pam Ray, population health coordinator. Both will talk about disease risk factors in our area and what we can all do to minimize that risk. Pam will also discuss health department services. Our community outreach speakers will be Roy Kirkpatrick, Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry, and Sheryl Helm, Head Start New River Valley. Donations of non-perishable food for the food pantry, and goldfish crackers, peanut butter and individually wrapped snack foods like granola bars and fruit snacks for Head Start, will be greatly appreciated. Other items that would benefit Head Start include wipes, pull-ups (sizes 4 and 5) and tissues. Meetings will be cancelled if Montgomery County Public Schools have a two-hour delay or are closed. Club welcomes all residents of the New River Valley, newcomer or otherwise.

Blacksburg Library Book Reading: Grace Toney Edwards

Acclaimed Radford University Professor Emerita Grace Toney Edwards will give a talk on Appalachian author Emma Bell Miles, titled "A Crusade for Mountain Women's Rights in the Fiction of Emma Bell Miles." Miles is best known for her book "The Spirit of the Mountains" (1905), an authentic account of the customs and traditions of mountain people, including the role of women. This presentation will tell the author's own life story and highlights of her fiction through photographs, through drawings and paintings done by Miles, and through illustrations done by other artists for her original magazine publications. All are welcome.

Adult Children of Alcoholics Support Group

This group is open to all in our community who may benefit from participating. ACA is a Twelve Step, Twelve Tradition program for adults who grew up in alcoholic or otherwise dysfunctional homes. The ACA program was founded on the belief that family dysfunction is a disease that infected us as children and affects us as adults. Our membership also includes adults from homes where alcohol or drugs were not present; however, abuse, neglect or unhealthy behavior was. We meet to share our experience and recovery in an atmosphere of mutual respect. We discover how alcoholism and other family dysfunction affected us in the past and how it influences us in the present. We begin to see the unhealthy elements of our childhood. This is a drop-in group for anyone who thinks they might benefit from attending.

NRV Project Linus Blanket Day

Project Linus is a national organization that enlists volunteer "blanketeers" to provide new, handmade, washable blankets for seriously ill and traumatized children, infants through teens. All styles are welcome: cotton, flannel, knit, crochet and fleece. The community is invited to participate by helping to make blankets, sewing labels onto completed blankets, or helping with cleanup at the end of the day. We will have some yarn, fabric and other blanket supplies available. You may work on site, or drop off. Donations are always welcome! Black History Month Program

Blacksburg Meditation Group

The format is informal and usually involves an hour of silent meditation, including time for sitting and walking. We then invite members of the group to stay for conversation. The first Sunday of the month from 7 to 7:30 p.m. a group member will offer meditation instruction and a guided meditation. This time is for anyone who would like to try out the group or who enjoys guided meditation, and beginners are especially encouraged to attend during this time. The group is led by active members, and is inclusive of people from any religious or meditation tradition. All experience levels welcome. AARP - Weather Preparedness and Weather Readiness

Phil Hysell, Warning Coordination Specialist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, will address our membership and will provide insight into how meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Blacksburg create and disseminate forecasts and warnings. Information about how to be ready, responsive and resilient to significant weather events that impact the New River Valley will also be presented.

Meadowbrook Roaming Readers

Join us for a winter fitness challenge at the library and enter for a chance to win a FitBit Activity Tracker. Pick up an activity log at the front desk and return completed logs by March 5 for entry into the drawing for the FitBit. The library will host a "roaming readers" walking club each Tuesday in January and February, so bring your smartphone and headphones to listen to an audiobook while you walk at the library.
