Big news is coming out of the Town of Okay in that funding for an expanded Okay Veterans Monument has been has been obtained.

"The Okay Preservation Committee is proud to announce that efforts to raise funds to complete the additions to the monument were a success!" exclaimed committee spokesperson Johnny Walker. "We will be hosting an unveiling ceremony Saturday, Dec. 16 at 2 p.m."

Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker will offer a welcome and Mike Stopp, chief of staff for Congressman Markwayne Mullen will be the keynote speaker.

Throughout the summer and fall, area residents supported multiple fundraising dinner and music events to help bring the project to fruition. The price tag on the additions made of granite was $8,000.

The Okay Military Memorial pays tribute to all veterans, past and present, from the Okay area.

"By adding a wing to each side of the existing monument, this will allow us to add more veteran names to the wall," Walker told the American-Tribune in an August interview. "When we did the initial monument, we didn't have enough room to put all of the names on, so when we unveiled it, we promised we would add to it for those who were not yet listed. We want to make good on our promise to honor them."

"Let's all come together this Christmas season to honor our veterans and those currently serving with the beautiful additions to the Okay Veterans Monument," Walker invited. "We will be honored by your presence.

Coffee and hot chocolate will be available.
