Providence Journal - 11/8/2018

Nov. 08--WaterFire will mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I with its annual Salute to Veterans on Saturday, the last full lighting of 2018.

The braziers will be lit in downtown Providence at 5:30 p.m. and burn until 11 p.m. Opening ceremonies will take place at 4 p.m. on the steps of the State House, followed by a torch procession to Waterplace Basin at 5:15 p.m.

A resource fair will be open along Washington Street and the Washington Street bridge beginning at 3:30 p.m., with organizations from across the state providing information for veterans and their families. Participating organizations include the Providence VA Medical Center, United Way and Citizens Bank, which will be actively recruiting veterans.

A World War I storytelling tent, also on Washington Street, will feature a collection of artifacts and memorabilia, local veterans sharing stories, and a book signing by Lauren E. Kelley, author of the children's book "Tuggie the Patriot Pup." Military vehicles will be displayed on the College Street bridge from 4 to 10 p.m.

The WaterFire Arts Festival Plaza sets up shop on Steeple Street from 4 to 10:30 p.m., showcasing artwork created in Rhode Island. Musician Bernard John will perform folk and rock at the Steeple Street Unplugged Stage at 6:30, 7:45 and 8:45 p.m.

RIPTA will offer free rides to veterans with proof of service such as a military identification card.
