The American Sign Language Avatar is a digital English-to-American Sign Language (ASL) translator designed to help individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing communicate with those who are not. Researchers at DePaul University have combined computer technology and linguistics research to create this avatar, which will be able to provide automatic translations of spoken English into ASL through ASL animation. This way, individuals who are deaf can understand spoken interactions. This avatar, named "Paula" for DePaul University, will be able to portray all linguistic parameters of ASL; produce signed language; provide Deaf education and interpreter training; and tutor caregivers of people who are both deaf and mentally challenged.
