COVID-19 cases spike in Christian County amid outbreak at Taylorville nursing home

Sep. 25--The Christian-Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency reported 60 new COVID-19 cases in Christian County Thursday afternoon, a spike fueled by an outbreak at a Taylorville long-term care facility.

The agency confirmed that 40 of those cases are linked to an outbreak at Taylorville Care Center, 606 S. Houston St.

That brings the facility's total number of cases to 53, including 40 residents and 13 staff members.

The agency also confirmed another death, bringing the county's total to 12. It was not immediately clear if the death was linked to the outbreak at the long-term care center.

Overall, 630 cases have been reported in Christian County, with seven currently hospitalized and 91 isolated.

Also Thursday, the agency confirmed that an employee in the Christian County Clerk and Recorder's office has tested positive for COVID-19.

The Christian County Health Department has implemented contact tracing to determine who may have come into close contact with the employee.

This is the second case of COVID-19 inside the Christian County Courthouse in a week and coincides with the first day of early voting.

Last week, the Christian County Circuit Clerk's office announced that it would close to in-person traffic through Sept. 29 due to a positive case.

However, county officials said the clerk and recorder's office and all other courthouse offices besides the circuit clerk's would remain open to in-person traffic, including early voters.

The agency said that voting booths and materials used will be wiped down after each use and masks are required for anyone entering the courthouse.

The agency also reported 11 new cases in Montgomery County, bringing its total to 341, including 13 deaths.

Meanwhile, 23 additional cases of COVID-19 were reported by Sangamon County public health officials Thursday, bringing the county's total to 2,323, including 45 deaths.

Among the new positive cases are two female teenagers, two men and a woman in their 20s, three women in their 30s, two men and two women in their 40s, three women and a man in their 50s, three men in their 60s and two women and a man in their 70s.

None of the new positive cases are hospitalized. Seven county residents are currently hospitalized, 405 are isolated and 1,866 have recovered.

Public health officials in Morgan County reported 14 additional cases, bringing the county's total to 664, including 24 deaths and 602 released from restrictions. The new cases involve a male infant, a female child, a man and a woman in their 20s, two men and two women in their 30s, three men in their 40s, a woman in her 50s and two men in their 60s.

Logan County health officials reported six new positive cases, bringing the county's total to 450, including one death and 403 who have recovered. The new cases involve two people in their 40s, a person in their 60s, a person in their 80s and two people in their 90s.

Cass County reported six new cases of COVID-19, bringing the county's total to 398, including 11 deaths and 347 who have recovered. One case is currently hospitalized.

The new cases include a two teenagers, a man in his 30s and a man and two women in their 40s.

No new cases were reported Thursday in Menard County.

The seven-day rolling positivity rate for Region 3, which includes each of the aforementioned counties, is 5.3%.

Statewide, the Illinois Department of Public Health reported 2,257 new positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the state's total to 281,371. Thirty additional deaths were reported, bringing the overall count to 8,538. The state's seven-day rolling positivity rate is 3.5%.
