JoCo ice cream shop that employs people with disabilities wants to open a second spot

An Overland Park-based nonprofit wants to open another Johnson County ice cream and coffee shop.
The Golden Scoop, which works to empower people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is going through Overland Park planning to open in a former McDonald’s at 10460 W. 103rd St., near U.S. 69. It has about two-thirds of its funding but is still seeking $100,000.
Donors can go to its website, thegoldenscoop.org/support, or they can email info@thegoldenscoop.org, said Amber Schreiber, president and CEO of The Golden Scoop.
The shop would employ about 25 people, called “super scoopers,” who would make the ice cream base, scoop ice cream and pour coffee, ring up orders and help with marketing.
It would offer eight ice cream flavors such as mint chocolate chip, along with pastries, smoothies, coffee drinks and egg bites.
The Golden Scoop first opened in the Nall Hills Shopping Center two years ago.

National fast-casual restaurant chain Beef-A-Roo had planned to go into the former McDonald’s building. It did not give a reason for dropping its plans for that spot.
