Walkway mats installed on Tolland Green

Journal Inquirer - 5/18/2023

May 18—TOLLAND — The Department of Public Works has installed temporary walkway mats on the Tolland Green to make the area more accessible for all residents.

Disabled residents have expressed concerns with not being able to attend events held on the green, including the new farmers market, and have embraced the installation of the temporary mats, Town Manager Brian Foley said Tuesday.

The mats had to be rolled out, flattened, and then nailed down, he said, adding that it took a four-man crew about two days to prep the area and install the mats.

Foley said he is looking for a permanent solution, but residents can expect to see the mats through the summer.

"We will consult with commissions. I will make a decision in the end of what to do going forward," he said.

There is already a concrete walkway on the green that is complaint with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Foley said, so there is an option to use the same material for the new walkway areas.

Foley said he does not know what the cost would be to install the permanent walkway, but said he anticipates using grant funding to cover it.
