Lima barbershop joins team to give back to nursing home residents

Lima News - 5/22/2023

May 22—LIMA — Lima nursing home residents came into the CareCore activities room one by one as the Fresh N Faded barbershop provided them with some TLC.

The barbershop joined Team Outreach Lima on Monday afternoon to spend time with the residents and give back. Director Quincy Peoples shared the importance of going into nursing homes to visit those who do not have much interaction outside of the home.

According to a recent press release, Sixth Ward Council Member Dr. Derry Glenn said the event was to bring awareness to nursing home residents who struggle with mental health issues including isolation and neglect. Fresh N Faded owner LeAndra Johnson provided haircuts to the residents. Peoples said this was not the first time employees working with the organization went to visit nursing home residents.

"We do a lot of work through Fresh N Faded and Team Outreach Lima," said Peoples. "Today we are giving back to the nursing homes. They are giving away haircuts. Team Outreach Lima will come back (tonight), play bingo and have a good time with the residents. We do a lot of work with the nursing home because you know people have the tendency to forget about those who reside in nursing homes. They're still human and they don't have much interaction with the outside world."

Peoples said the barbershop helped community members in nursing homes before COVID-19. The barbershop gives back to the community in different ways, including hosting trunk or treat events and Easter egg hunts.

"We did our first outreach through Lima Manor," said Peoples. "The pandemic shut everything down so now the pandemic is lifting a little bit so we're going to get back out to nursing homes and give people something to look forward to."

CareCore activities director Christina Hardy also weighed in on the event.

"Our residents don't get a lot of interaction and COVID did a lot of damage to our people," said Hardy. "When Team Outreach comes in, we get a lot of smiles and it makes them happy."
