Hanover Area eyes return to the classroom

The Citizens' Voice - 2/9/2021

Feb. 9—The Hanover Area School District plans to resume in-person learning for some students on March 1 and all students by March 22.

Superintendent Nathan Barrett made the announcement Monday during a virtual school board meeting held online.

As of now, in-person schooling will be made available March 1 to students who attend autistic support, emotional support and life skills classrooms, Barrett said.

Other "highest needs" students will be evaluated on a case by case basis, he said.

Pre-kindergarten, early intervention and sixth grade students would return on March 15, the superintendent said.

March 22 would resume a hybrid-format for all students in which half of the population would come in for in-person instruction one week and the other half would attend in-person the following week.

Barrett said parents and guardians will have the option to continue with all remote learning.

"Parents are the boss," Barrett said. "Were going to leave it up to parents."

When asked during the meeting why the district doesn't just continue with all remote learning for the rest of the year, Barrett said some students are underperforming.

"Some kids are not performing the best and we're trying options for people who feel their child needs to appear before their teacher," Barrett said.

Graduation is still set for June 8.
