'Kind' of day that is special to our community

Augusta Chronicle - 5/4/2021

May 4—One T-shirt read, "When you can be anything in the world, be kind."

A VERY Special Field Day, formerly known locally as Special Olympics, had the theme of kindness April 30 when students from the Screven County School System participated in many fun activities and, yes, displayed plenty of kindness.

Pam Collins, the system's occupational therapist who spearheaded this 39th gathering of the community, was pleased for its return after last year's COVID-19-influenced cancellation.

"Last year would have been the 39th," Collins told the large group of community mentor volunteers and school system staff on April 30 inside the county recreation department's gymasium. "It was the hardest thing that I have ever had to do was to cancel that event. Next year will be the 40th one and it is going to be a Hoo-Rah."

Collins said the world needs more kindness and this event is one way to show that simple gesture of kindness.

She said "one tiny drop of kindness can cause a ripple to create a wave of love.

"Any opportunity you get to be kind do it," Collins said. "You never know who it will affect."

Superintendent Dr. Jim Thompson thanked the community for being a part of A VERY Special Field Day as dozens of groups either donated items or volunteered their time to be with the students.

"This truly is a community event," Thompson said. "Thank you for being here for these beautiful children."

Thompson recognized Collins for her hard work in helping making this event a reality. Collins, in turn, thanked the many to assisted this year and years past.

The superintendent also honored two special education teachers in attendance who will be retiring this year — Jan Lariscy for 12 years and Tammie Colson for three. Doug Dirst also is retiring this year with 27 years of service.
