Star-News - 8/16/2021

Aug. 16—With a mission to help adults living with autism, IndependentWorks was one of many organizations who participated in the 2021 A Community Thrives, a $2.3 million initiative of The Gannett Foundation.

The Wilmington-based nonprofit exceeded a $3,000 goal by raising more than $4,375. Funds will be used for "supported living" neighborhood with smaller homes in a courtyard development. Founded in 2019 by parents and friends of adults with autism, IndependentWorks helps them live independently.

"We are so thrilled that so many people in the community supported us during this campaign," said Robert Ferber, treasurer for IndependentWorks.

Now in its fifth year, the purpose of the nationwide crowdfunding and grant program is to address social issues including education, housing, arts and culture, wellness and the environment. For 2021, more than 24,000 donors supported hundreds of nonprofits and helped raise $3.3 million for community building projects. This includes almost $50,000 in matching grants and $200,000 in Incentive Funds. Beyond this, the Gannett Foundation will be awarding more than $2 million in grants to select participating causes.

"We are hopeful that we will earn one of the Gannett Foundation grants, but either way we will be grateful for their help," Ferber said.

Two other Wilmington-areas participated along with IndependentWorks. Wilmington Youth Initiative Inc.-FirstTee raised $850. Funds will be used to introduce golf to youths ages 5 to 17 through after-school and in-school programs. While learning about the sport, participants also learn about healthy habits and values such as honesty, respect, and sportsman ship.

Donation opportunities are still available for the Cape Fear Guardian ad Litem Association. Funds from the nonprofit help children in the foster care enjoy special experiences such as going on field trips and participating in sports. Tutoring is also provided for children.

The fundraising challenge began Monday, July 19 and ended Friday, Aug. 13. The program is sponsored by the USA TODAY NETWORK's parent company, Gannett Co. Inc. The Wilmington StarNews is part of the nationwide network. Merit-based grant announcements will be announced in late September.
