Adopt a Stocking: Health issues difficult for single mom on disability

Lima News - 12/21/2021

Dec. 22—LIMA — Pajamas, extra-wide shoes and Nintendo games are luxuries that Sue's family can't afford.

Despite persistent back pain, the single mother of three serves as a caregiver for her mother, who has suffered from Parkinson's disease for a decade.

Furthermore, Sue's 21-year-old son is autistic; her eldest daughter is 18 and recently moved out of the house; and her 10-year-old girl "does what she can to help, but this whole situation is robbing her of a childhood."

Prior to deciding to take care of her mom three years ago, Sue was a stay-at-home mother. She is on "good terms" with her ex-boyfriend, who works for a railroad company and is frequently out of town.

"He pays for the car that I use to drive my mom to appointments, so that's helpful," Sue explained.

The family's financial aid comes courtesy of food stamps and disability checks, "which is what we have to work with," she said.

All in all, the household's dynamics pose a daily challenge. Her son is, for the most part, independent and tries to help Sue lift her mother out of a chair and into bed.

"Some days I can't do it because of my bad back," she said.

Although Christmas has always been difficult for the family, this year the holidays pose a daunting task when it comes to buying gifts.

"Any help is greatly appreciated," she said.

Sue's son, whom she referred to as a "big boy," requires men's triple-X wide shoes for his thick feet. Her youngest daughter has sufficient winter clothing, according to Sue, but would like Nintendo games that aren't a viable option.

Last but not least, what would her mom appreciate finding under the Christmas tree?

"She really needs pajamas and slippers, though she doesn't leave our house often because her mobility isn't good," Sue said.
