Creston RCMP lace up to support Special Olympics BC

Creston Valley Advance - 5/25/2023

This weekend, the Creston RCMP is stepping up to make a difference for Special Olympics BC.

Officers will join Special Olympics athletes and other community members for the Law Enforcement Torch Run event at 1 p.m., on Sunday, May 28.

Participants will run or walk many laps as possible at the Creston and District Community Complex soccer field.

That afternoon, Creston Fire Rescue will also host a hot dog barbecue by donation. All proceeds raised will be donated to Special Olympics BC.

For over 35 years, law enforcement members throughout the world have supported this annual event.

"We are very excited to be able to host this amazing event," said Sgt. Brandon Buliziuk, Creston detachment commander. "The Creston Valley has many Special Olympics athletes and we are thrilled that we are able to help fundraise in support of helping them reach their goals. We look forward to seeing you and your families there to participate in the walk/run, enjoy a snack, and spend time with our athletes and officers."

In Special Olympics BC's year-round sport, youth, and health programs, athletes with intellectual disabilities gain vital friendships, skills, and healthy activity. For too many of them, Special Olympics is the only place where they feel included and seen for their abilities.

More than ever, the organization needs support to overcome the pandemic's lasting impact on the programs loved by the athletes.

"Special Olympics has immensely helped my physical and mental health, and given me something I never would have expected - an entire community of athletes, coaches, and volunteers that are not only friends but family, that inspire you and drive you and give you courage to be the best you that you can be," said Kayley OlundRak, Special Olympics BC athlete.

Everyone can join in to help raise funds and awareness for athletes with physical or intellectual disabilities by registering online at letr.crowdchange.ca/29359/team/18364 or by showing up on event day. Creston has a goal of raising $3,000 (of which, $1,300 has been raised so far).

Supporters can also donate online, purchase a t-shirt, or raise funds and run/walk on their own with the Virtual Torch Run.
