Canton man arrested on domestic violence charge tried to divert police

CANTON Police allege an armed man on parole assaulted a woman and then called police to a different location so he could escape, according to Stark County Jail records.
But police caught up to and arrested James T. Hill Jr., 24, of 406 Girard Ave. NE, at 4 p.m. Thursday at a drive-thru business in the 2100 block of Tuscarawas Street E.
Jail records show he caused multiple injuries to the victim while armed with a handgun. Then he tried "to get the officers to another location via phone in an effort to evade capture."

Stark County court records show Hill went to prison in 2014 for carrying a concealed weapon and in 2015 for domestic violence, endangering children and violation a protection order.
Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction records show Hill is on parole, having been released from prison Aug. 3 for trespass into a habitation and two counts of felony domestic violence.
Court records also show the day he was released, he was arrested by police who saw him drop a bag of marijuana and a loaded 9mm handgun at 12th Street and Jones Court. He was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and having weapons under disability. The trial date has been set for Feb. 3.

Another felony domestic violence charge was lodged against him Dec. 7 when he was accused of assaulting his girlfriend. A warrant was issued, but he wasn't arrested until Thursday at the drive-thru.
Hill remained behind bars Friday, held without bond.
