State - 12/29/2019

Dec. 29--A Midlands man is behind bars after killing his girlfriend days after Christmas, the Lexington County Sheriff's Department said.

The fatal shooting happened Friday at the home of Brandon Lee Corder, the sheriff's department said in a news release.

The sheriff's department said the 29-year-old lives in the 100 block of Valley Lane, near the intersection of Platt Springs Road and Old Orangeburg Road, and a Walmart Supercenter.

While in the backyard of the property, Corder shot Joanie Leigh Youmans, according to the release.

The 42-year-old died at the scene, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said.

Youmans was shot in the upper body with a revolver, according to Sheriff Jay Koon.

Shortly after the shooting, Corder was arrested, the sheriff's department said.

He was taken to the Lexington County Detention Center where he was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to the release.

Corder remains locked up after his bond was denied Saturday, the sheriff's department said.

Court records show Corder has an extensive criminal history in Lexington County dating back to 2009, and most recently was convicted of shoplifting in August.

His criminal record includes a 2016 conviction of third-degree domestic violence, which court records show Corder received a 90-day suspended sentence after pleading guilty.

Among other charges Corder has faced are shoplifting, public disorderly conduct, pointing a firearm at a person, and arson, according to court records.

He has also been convicted of multiple traffic crimes, including DUI, court records show.
