Long Branch ex-teacher accused of more sex assaults on school children, prosecutor says

Asbury Park Press - 2/27/2021

LONG BRANCH - A former Long Branch elementary school teacher, already accused of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old student, is facing new allegations of sexual abuse against elementary school children, authorities said.

Gustavo Barrientos, 53, of Tinton Falls was arrested earlier this month on charges of charges of first-degree aggravated sexual assault and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child. Authorities said he had also showed the 10-year-old student pornography.

On Saturday, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni said Barrientos has now been charged with sexually assaulting "multiple other elementary school children."

The new charges were the result of a continuing investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and Long Branch police.

Authorities did not detail the nature of those allegations.

Barrientos taught at the George L. Catrambone School and had been teaching in New Jersey for 11 years, according to public records. He collected a salary of $65,485 in the 2018-2019 school year, records show.

He had also previously taught at Red Bank Charter School, authorities said.

He is the third Long Branch schools employee to be accused this year of sex crimes against a minor. The other two cases did not involve Long Branch students, officials said.

Barrientos is currently being held in the Monmouth County Jail awaiting a detention hearing.

Attorney information for Barrientos was not immediately available.

Investigators are still seeking additional information about Barrientos.

Authorities ask anyone with information to contact Detective Sgt. Shawn Murphy of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victim’s Bureau at 800-533-7443.or Detective Todd Coleman of the Long Branch Police Department at 732-222-1000.
