Convicted sex offender who fled before Autauga trial arrested in Texas

Montgomery Advertiser - 5/20/2021

PRATTVILLE — A convicted sex offender, who was a no-show a week ago at his trial in Prattville where he faced more than four dozen child sex charges, has been captured in Texas.

Gary Wayne George, 57, was arrested by U.S. Marshals on Wednesday, Chief Assistant District Attorney C.J. Robinson confirmed. George will be returned to the Autauga Metro Jail where he will be under no bond because of his failure-to-appear arrest. A new trial date has not been set.

His attorney, Andrew Odom, did not return phone calls and emails seeking comment.

George, who court records show had no last known address but it is believed he resided in Autauga County, faces 25 counts of production of obscene matter containing visual depiction of a person younger than 17 and 25 counts of possession of obscene matter containing visual depiction of a person younger than 17, three counts of rape in the second degree, three counts of sodomy and one count of violation of the Sex Offender Notification and Registration Act. He was not registered at the his previous address, records show.

The victim in the case is a girl who was younger than 16 at the time, and could not legally consent. George allegedly took pornographic photos of the victim.

George was set to go on trial this the week of May 10 before Circuit Judge Ben Fuller, but did not show up at the Autauga County Courthouse for jury selection. Fuller issued a warrant for his arrest for failing to appear in court, records show.

In 1996, George was convicted in Montgomery County of sexual abuse, where the victim was an 18-year-old woman, according to the statewide sex offender registry maintained by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Sex offenders must register with the law enforcement agencies where they live and are restricted to where they can live.
