Lady Gaga says the producer who raped her at 19 ‘dropped me off pregnant on a corner’ because she was ‘vomiting and sick’

The New York Daily News - 5/21/2021

Lady Gaga is opening up about being raped at 19, and how the traumatic experience led her to suffer a “total psychotic break” years later.

The pop superstar revealed the trauma she suffered as a young artist when she was sexually assaulted by a music producer in the first episode of “The Me You Can’t See,” Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry’s new Apple TV+ series, which came out Thursday.

During an emotional and deeply personal interview, the 35-year-old Oscar and Grammy-winning artist recalled when a male producer, whom she did not name, told her to take her clothes off.

“I said no. And I left, and they told me they were going to burn all my music. And they didn’t stop. They didn’t stop asking me, and then I just froze and I just — I don’t even remember,” she said, crying.

Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, said that her trauma would manifest years later. She was admitted to a hospital for pain and numbness, and ended up seeing a psychiatrist.

She couldn’t feel her own body, Gaga said. Then she felt “full-on pain,” and was also sick for weeks.

“I realized that it was the same pain that I felt when the person who raped me dropped me off pregnant on a corner, at my parents’ house, because I was vomiting and sick. Because I had been being abused, and I was locked away in a studio for months,” she said.

Her experience as a teen had led her to suffer a mental breakdown years later.

“I had a total psychotic break, and for a couple years I was not the same girl,” she said. “The way that I feel when I feel pain was how I felt after I was raped.”

The “Poker Face” singer, who first talked about her traumatic experience in 2014, added that she doesn’t feel comfortable naming her attacker.

“I understand this #MeToo movement, I understand that some people feel really comfortable with this, and I do not,” she continued.

“I do not ever want to face that person again,” she added.

“The Me You Can’t See” is a five-part series that tackles mental health issues. All episodes are now streaming on AppleTV+.
