Jun. 12—ELKHART — Detectives with the Elkhart County Homicide Unit have arrested one man in connection to a child abuse investigation after an unresponsive 4-year-old child was brought to a local hospital.

According to a release from the Elkhart homicide unit, first responders were dispatched to Elkhart General Hospital early in the morning Thursday for reports of a 4-year-old who had been beaten and was unresponsive.

The child's current prognosis is "not optimistic," according to the release.

The child's mother and a family friend talked to officers about their knowledge of the incident. Based on that information, detectives arrested a 19-year-old man in the 2800 block of Toledo Road in Elkhart. The man has not been formally charged as of Friday afternoon and probable cause documents related to the arrest have been sealed, according to the release.
