2-month-old boy dies of suspected child abuse Monday, police say

A 2-month-old boy was killed earlier this week in what police are investigating as a case of child abuse on the far west side of Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department announced Friday.

The investigation into the boy's death began on Monday, when police were called to IU Health West Hospital in Avon on a report of an injured infant boy. The boy died shortly after arriving at the hospital, IMPD officials said, and investigators later learned he had suffered those injuries in the 9200 block of Warrington Drive in Indianapolis.

The boy's death was ruled a homicide Wednesday, according to police. But officials Friday morning would not say what injuries the boy suffered, citing the ongoing investigation.

IMPD Officer Samone Burris told IndyStar the case is being investigated as potential child abuse and said detectives were "doing interviews" Friday.

No additional information about the death has been released.

The boy's death came days after a 5-month-old was killed Aug. 27 on the south side of Indianapolis. Child abuse detectives in that case said the infant "suffered from abusive head trauma," and the baby's father was later arrested in connection to the death.

Court records from the case indicate the father told investigators he shook the 5-month-old for several seconds before the baby died.
