Torrington domestic violence agency holding annual charity walk

New Haven Register - 5/12/2023

May 12—TORRINGTON — Susan B. Anthony Project's 6th annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes will return May 21 to the center of Litchfield. The Walk is the largest annual fundraising event for SBAP, which provides crisis and support services to domestic and sexual violence victims in northwest Connecticut.

During the walk, men and boys lead the way on the road to end interpersonal violence by literally walking a mile in women's high heeled shoes. All genders, ages, and abilities are welcome to participate, and the high heeled shoes are optional.

While participants are encouraged to join live event on May 21, options are still available for those who wish to take part virtually. Red high heels are available to Walkers who wish to walk an actual mile around Litchfield center, or simply for photo opportunities to raise awareness. Groups may also choose to host their own team walks on a day and place of their choosing, with assistance and support from SBAP staff.

In addition to walking and fundraising as an individual or as part of a team, those interested in supporting the event and SBAP's services are invited to sponsor the walk, pledge a walker, place an ad in the event program, purchase merchandise, make a general donation, or spread the word about the event and raise awareness about the issues of domestic and sexual violence in our community.

Susan B. Anthony Project's 6th annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is sponsored by SBAP Agency Sponsors Dymax Corporation, M&T Bank, Northwest Community Bank and Its Divisions, O&G Industries, Pillar to Post Home Inspectors, Thomaston Savings Bank, Torrington Savings Bank, twenty2 wallpaper, Union Savings Bank, and Webster Bank, and by Event Sponsors The BakeHouse, Beauty Mark Tattooing, Kirstin Etela, Forman School, Gengras Subaru, RAR Excavating, Sullivan Automotive Group, and Tile America. Sponsorship opportunities are still available to interested businesses and individuals.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, created by Frank Baird in 2001, is an international men's march where men and boys lead the way on the road to end sexual and domestic violence by walking a mile in women's high heels. Created by men, the Walk gives participants the opportunity to get their communities talking about a difficult subject while increasing awareness of the problem, offering opportunities for healing, and demonstrating men's willingness to walk with women and children as allies, advocates, and survivors.
