Knoch Primary principal failed to report alleged sex abuse, police say

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - 5/23/2023

May 23—Pennsylvania State Police say a Butler County elementary school principal failed to report alleged sexual abuse of a 5-year-old girl.

Knoch Primary School principal Dr. Greg Mandalas is a mandated reporter through his employment with the district, police said. They charged him with "Persons Required to Report Suspected Child Abuse" stemming from an incident Aug. 4.

The PA Child Protective Services Law of 1975 requires school employees to report suspected child abuse.

The Knoch School District said Mandalas is on paid administrative leave and that the district has "no further comment at this time" because it is a personnel issue, according to Tribune-Review news partner WPXI.

Superintendent David Foley addressed the matter on the school's website, writing: "Due to the serious nature of the charges, Dr. Mandalas has been placed on indefinite administrative leave. It is the district's understanding that the charges and alleged conduct of Dr. Mandalas do not involve a Knoch School District student. This is a confidential personnel matter. Therefore, I am unable to provide specific details at this time. However, I will work with the solicitor's office to provide as much information as legally permitted moving forward."

WPXI reported that police are expected to hold a news conference Tuesday morning to provide more details on the case.
