Family Resource Network offering support on parenting during COVID-19

Ponoka News - 12/31/2020

The Family Resource Network of Wetaskiwin, Ponoka, Rimbey and surrounding areas is sharing resources to help parents navigate the difficult time of raising children during COVID-19.

The Family Resource Network has been sharing advice from "Triple P: Positive Parenting Program" and offering support to parents needing help on getting through COVID-19 while taking care of both yourself and your child emotionally and physically.

Here are some of the key points in Triple P's parenting during COVID-19 guide:

Reassure your child that you family is your top priority

Try to stay as calm and comforting as possible in conversations with your child and explain that they should tell you if they aren't feeling well. Let them know with your actions and your word that it is part of your job to keep them safe and healthy and you will do everything in your power to so.

Take care of yourself the best you can

These are difficult times and it is completely reasonable to feel anxious, distressed, confused and angry at times. Dealing with your own emotions not only means that you are better situated to support your children but you are also setting a great example for your child.

Some strategies for dealing with big, uncomfortable emotions include: paying attention to your emotions and thoughts, taking a break from family interacting with family members if you are upset, talking to supportive friends and family, deep breathing, or exercise.

Taking time for a hobby you enjoy is also an effective way to reduce stress in addition to avoiding behaviours that may increase your stress.

Be truthful in answering children's questions

Keep your answers simple and appropriate to your child's developmental level and make sure you get your information from reliable sources. Start by asking them what they think they know about the issue, whether they heard it on social media or from their friends, before answering. If you don't know an answer offer to try to find it out from them. Lastly don't make promises you can't keep (e.g. things will be back to normal by your birthday).

More guide suggestions include: maintaining everyday routines, having a family plan, having plenty of interesting things to do at home, taking notice of behaviour you like, and reaching out and connecting with loved ones.
