Birmingham-based family therapy service expands to Montgomery

Montgomery Advertiser - 2/9/2021

Monique Johnson has seen children struggling with gender identity issues, kids as young as three years old with trauma, kids adjusting to the foster system, parents with drug issues and marriage problems and rampant anxiety and depression.

It’s gotten a lot worse during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Seeing a need in Montgomery, Johnson decided to expand her Birmingham-based Restorative Counseling Services to Alabama’s capital city. It opened in December at 1240 Hughes St., where Johnson’s staff has already been working with kids and families in the community.

A lot of times that has meant offering free counseling to a wider group around the child with whom they’re working.

“You can’t treat kids without treating the whole family. We’ve brought in grandparents, neighbors, anyone who’s invested in these kids,” Johnson said.

But they offer therapy for almost anyone, including individuals, couples and groups. Her office specializes in play therapy for kids to help them express difficult emotions, and they hold continuing education workshops. They also offer teletherapy through secure video technology.

Johnson said she recently hired a translator, and the staff of five are learning Spanish so that they can reach out to the Hispanic community.

The Montgomery office is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment on the weekends. The phone number is 334-245-3182.
