SOAR to increase help to military families

Mountaineer - 5/1/2021

Apr. 29—SOAR, an accredited outdoor adventure summer camp and boarding school for youth with ADHD and other learning disabilities, has proven to be a lifeline for many.

The cost of the tuition-based program is out of reach for many military families — those with children who have particular challenges should parents be lost during deployment or sustain a debilitating injury.

That's why SOAR has established a special fund to assist children of veterans, said James Jones, SOAR's development and scholarship director.

The goal is establish a $500,000 endowment — one that will provide up to $20,000 for children of military families each year.

Until now, SOAR has mostly communicated with veterans organizations, Jones said, but is no striving to increase awareness of its Hope for the Military Families Fund to other friends and donors.

"You often hear of SOAR and our desire to build scholarship funds, this fund however is unique," he said. "If you want to give back to the defenders of our freedom, there is no greater way than to help their children."

SOAR will provide donors with a report on how their donation has helped the scholarship child, thus bringing the donation full circle.

"As history has proven, when you help one life now, you are helping hundreds in the future exponentially," Jones said. "Won't you please consider making your gift to SOAR and support this worthy cause?"

SOAR is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and all donations are tax deductible. Donations may be given through the organization's website at www.soarnc.org, or checks can be sent directly to SOAR, PO Box 388 Balsam NC 28707.
